Sunburnt Red Paint Code

For those of us that have a Sunburnt Red/Oyster Super X, a Redwood Deadwood Special, or were fortunate enough to buy the Redwood metal, you may already know that the Sunburnt Red (Crimson) color was never color matched by the PPG Refinish Group. There is probably 60-80 gallons of the OEM coating left at the factory but it has to be baked at a fairly high temp to cure. Unlike all other colors that E-H used, this one is the only one that we cannot go to a paint store have easily mixed.

I have been working on uncovering this information for many months now, and just today I received the PPG Color Standard (the “Master”) from PPG for OEM #S28399 Crimson Red that E-H approved on November 1, 1999. I had an insider from PPG in Wisconsin loan them to me so I can have the color custom matched by a jobber shop that uses a colorimeter to color match paint from color chips. Granted, PPG would have been the best source for the color match, but they have no reason to do so now, nor will they do it for us bike owners.

I am hopeful that I can find a local automotive PPG dealer that can determine the correct color mix that will allow us to touch up our existing metal or to paint accessories to match. I will publish the information as soon as I get it. If you really want this information, please send an eMail message to superxtim@yahoo.com and I will be sure to send you a personal reply with the good news! And How!

I also posted a picture of the PPG Color Standard on this club.

If you've got a blue/silver or solid blue X, then this is for you. I
found a cross reference for blue touch up paint appears to be awfully
damn close.

Dupli-Color GM 393 (General Motors Dark Blue (M) 1984-1989)

Sure looks right to me, but then again,I wear corrective lenses :)

grass green and sage green were available on superX.
the sage green is PPG 44769. Wheels and optional panels
were cream color PPG DAV3838 or DAR3769. I'm not sure
which is correct as my paint sample is being used to
match for powder coating. I'm have 5 lbs of powder made
up. Ping me in a couple weeks and I'll know for sure.
