Chrome Master Cylinder Cover

After visiting three accessory shops carrying my dial caliper and rifling through the many chrome master cylinder covers offered, I have found a suitable match. It seems that our master cylinder covers are the same size as the 1987-1996 Honda VT1100 Shadow. It also seems to match my 1986 Gold Wing. For that matter, it's also the same size as my Kawasaki ZX11, though they don't list chrome covers for Ninjas :-)

You can go to any dealer who carries Cobra products and order them in any of three styles: solid, scalloped and grooved. I opted for the solid style. They retail for right at $30 each. That's the good news.

Now the bad news. Cobra's chrome quality is crap. Geez, sorry about cussing on a public board but I've gotta' call it like I see it. I just paid $30 for a little piece of aluminum with some plating (I only bought one--it's all they had and I wanted to verify before I bought two more). The chrome is hazy, has scratches that won't buff out (probably in the sub surface) and there are casting imperfections visible under the chrome.

I would give them the benefit of the doubt and say that this was a rare
example.Unfortunately a friend JUST ordered their floorboards for his '95 Honda Shadow. When they got to his house last Thursday, one of the mounts wasn't completely welded and had profuse rust all around the joint. Now I've bought this crappy master cylinder cover. I'm afraid that this probably isn't isolated. I will be writing them a nasty-gram shortly.

In the meantime, if anybody knows a better manufacturer of chrome master cylinder covers for the mid-late 80s Hondas, let us know.

This is my last followup on this topic. Today, I picked up the three Drag Specialties master cylinder covers I ordered last weekend. They
look great on the bike and cost $58 for all three.

For those interested, here is the Drag Specialties part number. It was originally for the 1984-87 Honda Gold Wing:
